Island's beaches fly the flag

Two of Sheppey’s bathing beaches will be flying the flag for the local area, having been named among the best in the country.

Minster Leas and Sheerness beaches will each be flying the prestigious Blue Flag, after Keep Britain Tidy announced this year’s winners.

The beaches are among only 68 in the country to receive the Blue Flag Award – widely considered to be the gold standard for beaches - after meeting the highest standards for cleanliness, facilities and water quality.

The two beaches also received the Seaside Award, making them among only five in the south east that will be flying both flags this year.

Leysdown beach also received the Seaside Award, which is Keep Britain Tidy’s own award for beaches that meet the very highest standards for cleanliness and facilities, which has been awarded to 117 beaches in the country this year.

Emma Wiggins, interim director of regeneration at Swale Borough Council, said:

"This is a fantastic achievement, and is a great reflection of the hard work the small, but dedicated, seafront services team put in - rain or shine - all year round.

"Our local beaches literally fly the flag for the local area to visitors from far and wide who provide a welcome boost to the local economy.

"To help sustain this in the long term, we are working with Southern Water who has committed to invest more than £7 million in improving local bathing waters.

"This will help make sure they meet the excellent standard required for the Blue Flag, and show visitors that local beaches are clean and safe, and meet the highest environmental and bathing water quality standards."

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said:

"It is great news for holiday-makers, overseas visitors and businesses that rely on coastal tourism that we have been able to award so many flags this year.

"The success of our beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards are a real testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers to local people and businesses.

"When you enjoy a day on the beach flying a Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country."
