Failing to pay fine leads to court

Twelve people have been prosecuted for failing to pay a fixed penalty notice (FPN) for littering in the borough.

The cases were brought by the council after each had been caught dropping litter, and had been issued with an FPN.

Despite reminder letters and a summons to attend court being sent to the defendants, they each failed to pay the FPN, and were fined by magistrates.

Cllr Alan Horton, cabinet member for safer families and communities at the council, said:

"Some people think that no one will notice if they drop litter on our local street, but they are very much mistaken.

"When caught, the majority accept they have committed an offence, but there are a few who think that by ignoring the FPN, the problem will go away and they’ll get away with not paying. These prosecutions clearly show that is not the case.

"We’re determined to get the message through that we - and the overwhelming majority of people in the borough - won’t tolerate littering on our streets."

They each received a £220 fine, and were ordered to pay a £30 victim surcharge and £205 costs. They were:

One further defendant also received a fine, having entered a guilty plea by post.

The cases were heard at Maidstone Magistrates Court on 14 August.

Any surplus income – above what it costs to provide the FPN scheme - is used for local environmental initiatives such as new bins, litter picks and pocket ash trays for smokers.
