Stray dogs service scoops gold - again!

For the ninth year in a row, our stray dog service has been highlighted as one of the best in the country by the RSPCA.

The service has once again been awarded the Gold Footprint Award, which recognises good practice in animal welfare by local authorities in England and Wales.

Because we have been awarded a Gold pawprint for five consecutive years, and in recognition of the PawPrints’ Awards 10th anniversary, we have also been awarded a Platinum Stray Dogs Pawprint.

The award also recognises organisations that have gone above and beyond their basic service requirements to ensure higher animal welfare standards, and those that demonstrate the importance of actively promoting schemes and services such as micro-chipping.

Cllr David Simmons, cabinet member for environment and rural affairs at the council, said:

"Hopefully, most people will never come across our stray dog service, but for those who do – when they’ve lost or found a treasured pet – it’s good to know that the service is of the highest standard.

"This award recognises the entire service – the effectiveness of taking the initial call, the officer who retrieves a dog, the out-of-hours provision, and even the use of social media to reunite owners and pets.

"We were the first council in Kent to receive the award, and the fact we’ve held it ever since shows a consistent level of high quality that local people should be proud of."

For news on stray dogs found in Swale, follow the council’s twitter account or the service’s Facebook page.

If a dog is found between 5pm and 9pm on weekday evenings, and between 9am and 9pm at weekends and on bank holidays, the public should ring the found stray dog line on 07795 237479.
