Poppy Knitathon this weekend

Do it online

Monday 1 October

Beginners welcome at centenary preparation event

Whether you’re a novice knitter or are already competent at crochet, you can help mark 100 years since the end of the First World War at a special knitathon this weekend.

Swale Borough Council is working with the Royal British Legion, Sheppey Matters and Sheppey Gateway, as well as local libraries and community groups, to create a display of knitted and crocheted poppies as well as local art at Sheppey Gateway.

The group is looking for local people to get their knitting needles out, get creative and make a poppy (or several) to contribute to the project and has organised a knitathon on Saturday 6 October, from 10:30 to 15:30 at Sheppey Gateway (38-42 High St, Sheerness).

No knitting experience is necessary as knitters will be on hand to show you how to knit or crochet a poppy. Wool (red and black), needles and patterns will be provided or bring your own and refreshments will be available.

Anyone who wants to contribute to the project, but can’t make the knitathon, can donate poppies until Friday, 26 October 2018, at:

For more information about the project, please contact Justin Aggett at Sheppey Matters on 01795 585335.
