Gold Award for animal welfare emergency plans

The council has once again won a top award for putting animal welfare at the centre of plans for dealing with emergencies.

For the second time in a year the RSPCA has awarded the council the Gold Contingency Planning Footprint for its work to ensure the welfare of companion animals during an emergency.

We have been recognised for our work with animal welfare organisations and related groups in the contingency planning process.

We met the demanding criteria, by successfully providing evidence of policies and procedures for animal welfare as part of our work to ensure the council is fully prepared in the event of an emergency, as well as providing information for the public and animal related businesses on how they can be prepared to look after their animals during an emergency.

We worked to make sure contingency plans cover the issue of pets in an evacuation and in rest centres. Emergency planning test exercises in the borough include scenarios involving animals to make sure their welfare is taken into consideration.

Cllr Andrew Bowles, leader of the council, said:

"We know that, in an emergency, people will be concerned for their pets and livestock – and have been known to put their animal’s safety ahead of their own.

"It is an honour to once again receive this award, which recognises the work we have put in to make sure our plans address people’s concerns.

"Animal welfare is extremely important to us and I would like to congratulate the team for their efforts to continue maintaining high standards and ensuring animals are not forgotten in the event of an emergency incident."

There is more information on how you can prepare to look after your pets during an emergency on our emergency planning pages.
