Sheerness town council consultation

Monday 23 April

Views wanted on new council

Sheerness residents have the chance to give their views on whether a new town council should be set up.

Information is being sent to households in the town asking for views on draft recommendations to set up a new town council with nine councillors, with the first election to be held in May 2019.

This follows an initial consultation sent to 7,995 electors and 987 properties, which suggested significant support for the setting up a town council – with 1,406 responses in favour, and 569 against.

The results of the initial consultation were discussed by Swale Borough Council last month, where the draft recommendations were agreed. The council is required to notify interested persons of the draft recommendations, which is being done through this second consultation.

The initial consultation was triggered after a 635-signature petition was submitted by residents requesting the council carry out a community governance review – the first step towards setting up a new town council.

This second consultation will run until 21 May, with the results being reported back to council in June when a final decision will be made.

People can make comments until 21 May 2018 by email or in writing to Democratic Services, Swale Borough Council, Swale House, East Street, Sittingbourne, ME10 3HT. Written comments can also be handed in to Sheppey Gateway, marked for the attention of Democratic Services.
