Sittingbourne square naming

Do it online

Tuesday 8 May

Ideas wanted for new public square

People are being invited to help name the new public square being created by the Spirit of Sittingbourne regeneration project.

The new square will link the new eight-screen cinema and six new restaurants to the train station, as part of plans to help attract up to 400,000 visitors to Sittingbourne each year.

Spirit of Sittingbourne – the consortium behind the town centre regeneration scheme – wants people to submit their ideas for what the new public space, with the best suggestions being shortlisted for a public vote.

Cllr Mike Cosgrove, cabinet member for regeneration at the council said:

"We had a great response to the vote to name the new Princes Street Retail Park which showed people are excited about the regeneration of Sittingbourne.

"This project came from the wish of local residents to see their town centre improved, and we want to make sure they are involved as much as possible.

"I’m sure we’ll get more than a few suggestions along the lines of ‘Squarey McSquareface’, but we’ll hopefully also get some creative and interesting ideas for people to vote on.

"The next significant phase of work will soon be getting underway, and we’re already seeing more investment in the high street as firms are trying to get in early, ready for when the scheme comes to life."

Ideas for names can be submitted by email or be submitted via Facebook or Twitter, by 5pm on Friday 18 May.

A shortlist will then be put together for people to vote for their favourite, which will be announced at the Full Council meeting on 13 June.
