Blue Flag's to fly over Minster Leas and Sheerness

Two of Sheppey’s bathing beaches have been named among the best in the country.

Minster Leas and Sheerness beaches will each be flying the prestigious Blue Flag, after Keep Britain Tidy today (Wednesday, 15 May) announced this year’s winners.

The beaches are among only 71 in the country to receive the Blue Flag Award – widely considered to be the gold standard for beaches - after meeting the highest standards for cleanliness, facilities and water quality.

The two beaches, along with Leysdown beach, also received the Seaside Award, which is Keep Britain Tidy’s own award for beaches that meet the very highest standards for cleanliness and facilities, which has been awarded to 137 beaches in the country this year.

Martyn Cassell, head of commissioning, environment and leisure at Swale Borough Council, said:

"This is a fantastic achievement that is a great reward for the hard work the small, but dedicated, seafront team put in - rain or shine - all year round.

"Our local beaches literally fly the flag for the local area to visitors from far and wide who provide a welcome boost to the local economy.

"To help sustain this in the long term, we are working with Southern Water who is investing in improving local bathing waters.

"This will help make sure they meet the excellent standard required for the Blue Flag, and show visitors that local beaches are clean and safe, and meet the highest environmental and bathing water quality standards."

Keep Britain Tidy’s chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton said:

"Visiting beaches with the Blue Flag or Seaside Award status means beach-goers can feel more relaxed in a setting that is environmentally considerate.

"We as individuals feel emotionally connected to the environment more than ever, with so many experiencing eco-anxiety. Keep Britain Tidy continues to push for more environmentally responsible beaches, where visitors needn’t feel this stress.

"We’re incredibly pleased to have even more winners this year than last, proving the great dedication of the beach staff. From environmental education for the local community and ensuring responsible beach use, to cleaning regimes and an increasing number of recycling facilities, it is a full-time commitment to create beaches worthy of the awards.

"A trip to the beach should always be care-free and visitors can guarantee this with even more Blue Flag and UK Seaside Award winners than last year."
