The old walkway along the former rifle range at Barton’s Point Coastal Park is now open.

Swale Borough Council fenced off the partially covered walkway last year after sections of the roof collapsed, and the structure was deemed to be potentially dangerous following inspections by a structural engineer.

Several sections of the concrete roof panels had collapsed, and the supporting metal posts were corroded.

The council obtained quotes for three different options to make the structure safe, including total restoration for approximately £250,000, restoring just the roof for £30,000, and to remove the roof and upright supports for £17,000. The decision was made at the council’s Sheppey area committee meeting in May.

Work took place earlier this month to remove the roof and corroded posts and the walkway is again open to the public.
