People are being invited to join Swale Borough Council this national tree week to plant trees in parks, recreation grounds and green spaces around Swale.

The council plans to plant more than 1,000 trees - around 200 each day - with events in Rushenden, Milton Creek Country Park, Oare Gunpowder Works, King George V Rec, and Millfield Park, every morning from Monday, 28 November to Friday, 2 December.

Events will run each day from a different location starting at 9am. Volunteering will be on a first come, first serve basis.

National Tree Week is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration and this year runs from Saturday, 26 November to Sunday, 4 December.

Cllr Julian Saunders, chair of the environment committee at the council, said:

“We’re planting trees in Queenborough, Sittingbourne and Faversham for tree week and would love local volunteers to come and join us.

“Tree planting during national tree week marks the beginning of our annual planting season, and we’ll be aiming to plant around 200 trees each day.

“Planting will be on a first come first serve basis, and we’ll be on site at that day’s location from 9am, so arrive early with your water, boots, gloves, and possibly a raincoat.”

Cllr Tim Valentine, vice chair of the environment committee at the council, said:

“Planting trees is part of our climate and ecological emergency action plan, and it would be wonderful to have local people join us to take positive action for the environment in Swale.

“We plan to plant a native mix of beech, maple, willow, hornbeam, hazel, dog rose, alder, roan, silver birch, cherry, lime, and apple trees.

“You will also get the chance to meet our regular volunteers and find out more about opportunities to get involved on a more permanent basis.”
