Byelaws

Bylaws are laws which are made by a local authority and only apply within a specific geographical area

Bylaws are usually only created when there is no general legislation that deals with particular matters of concern to local people

Bylaws must be 'confirmed' (approved) by a secretary of state for the government before they can come into force. Before applying for approval, councils have to advertise any proposed bylaws in the local press to give members of the public a chance to comment on them.

Swale Borough Council has in excess of one hundred local bylaws for the borough.

You can arrange to view copies of our Bylaws by telephoning our Legal Services team.

Alternatively, you can write to:

  • Legal Services
  • Swale Borough Council
  • East Street
  • Sittingbourne
  • Kent
  • ME10 3HT

Please remember to specify the Bylaw you are interested in or telephone if you require help.
