The Mayor of Swale, Cllr Derek Carnell
Derek Carnell was born in Dartford. He left school aged 16 and worked for Thames Water from 1966- 2009 rising through the ranks to Senior Shift Engineer.
In 2006 he was appointed a Magistrate for Central Kent based at Maidstone.
He moved to the Chatham Family Court in 2015 before retiring from the bench in 2020.
In 2022 he was appointed to the Witness Service based at Maidstone Crown Court.
Derek was first elected as a Swale Borough Councillor for Kemsley Ward in May 2019.
He has sat on several Swale Council committees including Audit , Health and Housing, Sittingbourne Area and has Chaired the Licensing Committee. He is also the Committee member for Milton Creek Country Park.
Derek is a keen golfer and is treasurer of the Over 55 club in Kemsley.
He has 4 children, and his wife Pat will be his Mayoress for the coming year.
