Working on Trees

Check if a Tree is Protected

Use this service if you want to know if a tree is protected.

If you perform work on a protected tree without permission including trimming, lopping, topping, or uprooting trees or there branches, you could be taken to court.

If a tree isn’t protected by a TPO, it may still be in a conservation area and you would still need permission before working on it.

Before you get started

You can ask us to check if a tree is protected online. You'll need:

  • your house number and postcode
  • a description of the exact location of the tree

What happens next

Once we've received your request we'll check our records.

We'll tell you if the tree is protected or not, as well as what to do next.
