Ways to pay

The council tax financial year is from 1 April to 31 March and the amount due will be payable in 10 monthly instalments. Direct debits start in April and finish in January each year. The instalment date will be shown on your bill which is the date your payment must reach your Council Tax account.

If you would like to pay by 12 instalments please contact the council tax section by 15 April of the billing year. If you wish to pay annually, half yearly or quarterly - payment must be made when the first instalment becomes due.


Residents can now receive their council tax bills electronically with copies of their bills attached as a pdf document.

You can setup e-billing for Council Tax online. Alterntively, you can email or phone 01795 417272 our Council Tax team.

Set up a direct debit to pay your council tax or business rates

You can complete a direct debit online form without registering or signing in.

To complete this form you will need your council tax number, bank or building society sort code and account number, as well as the address of the relevant property and an email address. If you have just moved to Swale, please wait for an account number to be given to you before completing this direct debit form.

When the form is completed it will create an instruction to your bank or building society to pay by direct debit. The council's Originator's Identification Number (OIN) for Council Tax is 941303 and for Business Rates is 996341.

We have four payment dates 1, 8, 15, 21 or 28 of each month. You can change the day you pay your Council Tax on using our online form. You'll need your Council Tax reference number and address to do it.

Debit or credit card

You can pay by Maestro, Solo, Delta, Mastercard and Visa. You will need your council tax number.

Other ways to pay

You can also pay your Council Tax by PayPoint, cheque or standing order.

PayPoint payment

We have increased the number of outlets that you can pay by cash, however, you will need a Payment Card.

If you would like to pay using a PayPoint card please contact 01795 417272.

PayPoint can then be used in any shop or outlet displaying the PP logo for ongoing payments.

Please note that we cannot accept cash as payment at any council office.


Cheques can be sent to Swale Borough Council at Sittingbourne. Please make your cheque payable to 'Swale Borough Council' and put your account number on the back.

Cheques can also be used to pay your Council Tax at the Post Office - you will need a Payment Card.

Standing order

You can arrange for your bank to send your payments directly from your bank account.

You will need the following information:

Please quote your Council Tax Account Reference Number. This will start with a 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7.

Payments can take 5 working days to reach Swale Borough Council so please ensure your payment is made in time to reach your account.

Late payments

You have a legal right to pay by instalments. However, this will be forfeited should you fail to pay.
