The Mayor of Swale, Cllr Sarah Stephen and the Mayor's Consort, Cllr Paul Stephen.

Sarah Stephen moved to Sittingbourne in 1984, living initially in Highsted Valley before moving to Tunstall.   She worked as a midwife at Maidstone Hospital, then as a Community Midwife in Sittingbourne and Sheppey from 1988 to 1997. She was awarded her Master’s Degree in Clinical Ultrasound and worked in London setting up one of the first Early Pregnancy Units in the UK at UCLH, specialising in caring for women who had suffered miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies.

In 2010 Sarah and her husband Paul qualified as yoga teachers after a 5 year Diploma training with the British Wheel of Yoga.  They teach classes locally as well as internationally supporting a project close to Sarah’s heart “ Yoga as a tool for peace in Palestine and Israel”.

Cllr Stephen was elected for Woodstock Ward in 2019 and has taken a very active role within the Coalition as Deputy Cabinet Member for Economy and Property, as well as being Mayoress supporting Paul for the two challenging years during the pandemic followed by the gradual return to the new normal.

Cllr Sarah Stephen served as Deputy Mayor from 2022/23 and was elected Mayor on 17 May, 2023.
