Conservation Areas

Reviewing conservation areas

We review conservation areas to ensure that they still retain the special character and appearance that warrants an additional level of planning control.

We'll run a public consultation if:

  • we're going to review an existing conservation area
  • we create a character appraisal or management strategy
  • we're going to make changes to a conservation area

You can download our heritage strategy (PDF 1MB), which sets our our plan to review Swale's conservations areas.

Character appraisals and management strategies

Character appraisal and management strategy documents are produced for particular conservation areas to help ensure that:

  • key characteristics of the area are captured
  • issues affecting the special character and appearance of the area have been correctly identified
  • the management strategy put forward to address these issues is appropriate
