Conservation Areas
The purpose of a conservation area
A conservation area is an area of special architectural or historic interest, with characteristics that are desirable to preserve or enhance.
When we designate a conservation area, we take into account things like:
- historic layout of roads, paths and boundaries
- characteristic building and paving materials
- the mix of building uses
- landscape and tree cover
- private spaces
Conservation areas can include groups of buildings, terraces, or even entire villages and towns.
Reviewing conservation areas
We'll run publication consultations if we're:
- designating a new conservation area
- de-designating an existing conservation area
- altering the boundaries of an existing conservation area
- introducing additional control in a conservation area by means of a special mechanism called an Article 4 Direction
After an area is designated a conservation area
Once conservation area status has been granted, the area will appear in a local land charge search.
