Chapters in this topic
Introduction
A major emergency is something on a scale that needs special arrangements between agencies to deal with it and can include things like:
- extreme weather
- major flooding
- serious transport accidents, like a plane crashes or motorway ‘pile ups’
- explosions, fires or industrial accidents
- shortages of essential supplies like water, food or electricity
- an outbreak of an infectious disease
Dealing with a major emergency
The emergency services, local authority, health trusts, voluntary agencies and the utility companies all have co-ordinated emergency plans in place to help deal with a major emergency. The aim is to save life, contain the hazard, protect the public and maintain our day to day services.
