What is an overpayment

An overpayment happens when you get more Housing Benefit than you're entitled to.

If you've received too much Housing Benefit

If we've paid you too much Housing Benefit, we will usually ask you to pay it back.

If we've paid you too much Housing Benefit, we'll send you a letter which gives you information about the overpayment, including:

  • why the overpayment happened
  • the amount you were overpaid
  • the period it was overpaid

The letter will also tell you how we intend to recover the overpayment and what to do if you disagree.
