Abandoned vehicles

Report an abandoned vehicle

Use this service to report a vehicle that hasn’t moved for at least four weeks, including vehicles that:

  • have smashed windows
  • are missing their petrol cap

If the vehicle is:

  • a company vehicle with a contact number please call the number before reporting to us
  • obstructing the road, including where it's been abandoned on a junction, you should call the Police on 101

Before you get started

You can report an abandoned vehicle online, you’ll need:

  • the registration, make and model  of the vehicle
  • your telephone number
  • your email address
  • to know the exact location of the vehicle

What happens next

Once you’ve reported an abandoned vehicle, we’ll check with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to try and find the legal owner.

If we believe the vehicle’s abandoned, we may put a 24-hour, 7 or 15-day notice on the vehicle. We will write to the legal owner, if we find them, to let them know what’s happening.

If the vehicle hasn’t been claimed after the notice has expired and it’s still in the same location, we’ll arrange to have it removed.

If the vehicle's causing and obstruction, we may work with the Police to remove it. If the vehicle is dangerous, we may remove it immediately.
