Housing Benefit

Apply

You can apply for Housing Benefit online. You’ll need:

  • your National Insurance Number
  • an email address

You'll also need to provide details about yourself and anyone who lives with you, including income and benefits.

What happens next

Once we’ve received your application, we may ask you to send us more information before we can process your claim.

Once your claim has been processed, we’ll send you a letter to tell you if your claim has been successful.

Your letter will explain how we worked out your entitlement to Housing Benefit. If you don’t understand your entitlement letter, you can watch our video which explains it.

If your claim has been successful:

  • we’ll normally pay your Housing Benefit to you but you can choose to pay it to your landlord instead
  • you may be entitled to extra help if the amount we pay isn’t enough to cover your rent
