Damp and mould

Tackling damp and mould - tenants

Damp and mould can be a persistent problem in many homes. Here are some practical steps you can take to prevent and address these issues:

Clean up mould

  • use a fungicidal wash but follow the product instructions carefully
  • avoid bleach as it doesn't reliably kill mould spores
  • wear protective gear such as  gloves, mask, and goggles
  • ventilate the area by opening windows and doors
  • dispose of affected materials such as carpets, curtains, and wallpaper which may need to be replaced

Reduce moisture

  • wipe down surfaces and regularly clean tiles and windows
  • ventilate while cooking by using extractor fans and opening windows
  • dry clothes outdoors when possible, and if indoor drying is necessary, run an extra spin cycle, use well-ventilated rooms and  try to dry items during the day
  • shorten showers or use a smaller shower head to reduce steam and water usage
  • dry bathroom surfaces, squeegee walls and leave the door open

Improve ventilation

  • open windows and internal doors twice daily, even for a short time
  • use extractor fans during and for 20 minutes after activities that generate moisture
  • make sure trickle vents on windows are open
  • keep internal doors open as much as possible
  • avoid blocking airflow by keeping furniture and clutter away from vents and radiators

Maintain a warm home

  • set a healthy temperature - around 18-21°C
  • heat your home consistently and avoid drastic temperature changes
  • bleed radiators to make sure they're distributing heat efficiently
  • insulate your home to reduce heat loss and prevent condensation

Report the issue to your landlord

  • notify your landlord in writing and clearly outline the problem
  • ask about energy efficiency upgrades such as insulation and improving ventilation
